Speedking, the infamous and short-lived band from NYC that had a reputation for brutal, loud, intense and devastating live shows finally got the release they always deserved. In the mid-90’s, the band was fairly active; it recorded 4 seven inch singles for 4 separate labels, toured with the likes of Six Finger Satellite and June of 44 and recorded a brilliant full-length entitled The Fist and the Laurels which was never released, until now. Featuring James Murphy, who went on to found both DFA Records and LCD Soundsystem, the LP version of this career spanning discography sold out in less than a month.

Anecdotes

Many months before we met James Murphy, Mike Treff was going bonkers over finding a slew of Speedking 7″s at Mike Simonetti’s table at More Than Music Festival in 2001. When we met James we were initially talking about sub-distributing his upstart label called DFA (yep that DFA) but then went on to discuss the fact that there was a long lost Speedking record that was never released. Although it went against our principals to release albums by bands that didn’t tour, we had to pay homage to Speedking at least for Mike’s sake. So we did it and we were proud…especially Mike. We’re pretty sure that James went on to enjoy a bit more success with LCD Soundsystem.
