TS-002 / Lilys/Aspera Ad Astra Split
The Lilys and Aspera Ad Astra. Old school vs. new school, at least at the time. Perhaps the only thing that these two bands had in common is that they were both based in Philly. Kurt Heasley of The Lilys and Matt Werth of Aspera had played together in the buzz-worthy Mazarin, but the similarities ended there. Nonetheless, the eight tracks presented here (4 from The Lilys, 4 from Aspera Ad Astra) are a cohesive and comprehensive documentation of yesteryear’s underground and tomorrow’s new sound, for 2000.
We were friends with the Aspera kids well before this release. We had a blast visiting them in Philly whenever we could see them and loved their throwback psychedelic sound. Back in 2000, we were driving with the Lily’s Kurt Heasley and Mike played him The Rapture’s “Mirror” album. Kurt didn’t get it and thought the band wasn’t going anywhere…who’s got egg on their face now, Kurt? Sorry, we’re a bit sour on Kurt who ran off with the money we gave him to record new tracks for this EP and, instead, handed us old tracks he recorded for spinART but were never released. Bollocks.
